Memphis Lives in Me

David Bryan and Joe DiPietro

This is a simplified version of the song that I created for an 8-year-old student. It's played on just the 6th string, in the key of E. Instead of chord names, only the 6th string fret number is provided.

Playing a bass line on the 6th string is the easiest way to play a song on guitar--perfect for total beginners or kids who want to sing and play at the same time.

   There's a town that I call home

9 (½)                     5 (½)              0

Where all the streets are paved with soul

5                                                               7

Down on Beale there's a honky-tonk bar,  Hear the wail of a blues guitar

9                                                                    10 (2)

Have a beer and drop a dime in the blind man's jar

0 (½)                   2 (½)            4 (½)                    5 (½)

The blues sing softly in the air like a Sunday morning prayer

0 (½)                                   7 (½)           0

Just one more drink and you'll see God everywhere

0 (½)                      2 (½)  4 (½)                         5 (½)

Like a sad old melody       tears you up but sets you free

0 (½)                 7 (½)

That's how Memphis lives in me

/ 0 - 2 - / 4 - 5 7 /

There comes a time when muddy waters run rough

There comes a point when a man has had enough

12                                                   / 5 - - 4 /

Like a friend who always stands by me

2 (½)                              4 (½)                          5 (½)                   7 (2)

Memphis knows me, Memphis shows me, How this life just has to be

0 (½)        2 (½)     4 (½)               5 (½)

I couldn't even try to run away, say goodbye

0 (½)                         7 (½)              0

Here I was born and here is where I'll die

0 (½)                           2 (½)         4 (½)                 5 (½)

   I'm just a man from Tennessee, I can't be what I can't be

0 (½)                  7 (½)          0

All I know is Memphis lives in me

0 (½)                      2 (½)         4 (½)                 5 (½)

Just a man from Tennessee, can't be what I can't be
