There’s something satisfying about a true classic. I thought I’d dig up one of my favorites from this blog: Strumming 101.

Since I posted this tutorial on how to strum a guitar in 2005, over 100,000 people have visited it. Every week or so, someone leaves a comment telling me how much they enjoyed it. It’s gratifying to know that I’ve had the privilege of introducing so many people to the guitar.

I remember writing that tutorial. I expected 100 people might read it. I was living alone for the first time, in a dumpy apartment, above a neighbor who’d blast an airhorn when my students would tap their feet.

Five years later, I’m married, living in my own home, and starting development of a beginner’s guitar course that I’ll starting this winter. I hope every page of it has the same spark as this tutorial: Strumming 101

  3. Thanks for all the inspiration Rob. After being laid off at the beginning of the year from my job of 10 years at the local music store, I was really trying to figure out what to do with my life. I read your e-book, and it totally inspired me, it made teaching seem possible, and a really exciting possibility at that.

  5. I like how you write about the traditional ways of picking but also make the reader aware that some well-known artists sometimes do things differently and why. You’ve done a nice job of bringing the article alive with the videos and your humor. (Yes, I saw the face drawn on your pick hand…)

  7. Rob, I really enjoy the strumming videos. Just what I need; however, would like to suggest that the last thing you do on the video is play the strum for a fast song as it often sounds different to me when played quickly. Thanks, Charlene

      Ha ha ha! I’m working on it tonight, Rob (well, I’m making a book for my sister’s husband, and then plundering the content for my upcoming beginning guitar course). Reuse and recycle!

  12. I am wondering if anyone knows the strumming pattern for the song Even Now By Caitlin and Will. Ive watched the video and still can make it out. Is it down down down up down? Help
