Here's my first-ever free song lesson video: "Let Her Go" by Passenger, for beginning and intermediate guitarists who want to learn how to both sing and play the song. This gorgeous tune is already hugely popular, and now that it's the soundtrack to Budweiser's cute Super Bowl puppy-and-horse-are-buddies commercial, the hugeness will only expand.
Some background...
For the past year and a half, I've been shooting footage for a video-based beginning guitar course I'm calling "Rob's Totally Awesome Guitar Crash Course." The course won't be done until this fall, and in the meantime, I'm hungry for feedback.
So I've decided to shoot some free song lessons on the side: Stuff I can release, and get feedback on, now. Any feedback y'all give me on what's working and what's not would be tremendously helpful. Should I make more of these?
Words of encouragement motivate me to make more free lessons like this one. Share with your musical friends, and thanks for checking this out.

This is great – thanks for sharing. I thought the overall lesson was good and very thorough. In some aspects, I think it was too thorough. I would split out the part about singing into a separate video that you can reference in all of your videos. I think it is a good message, but makes an already long video even longer. I like the time spent on the strum patterns, which is always the hardest part for me. I imagine that is just how you do it in a live lesson, which is great. Overall great video. I love your site and your style and hope for more like this!

Great feedback, thanks Rob. I’m going to stick to material specific to the song I’m teaching in future lessons, and maybe create some general instructional videos I can refer people to. Stay tuned for some song lessons in a new, streamlined format…
Nice video and lesson! I’m so impressed that anyone can put together a video of a popular song and have it available to teach to the world. When I was younger I had to wait for a song to appear in the TAB section of Guitar World magazine and then try to figure it out myself!

I hear you, man. And more often than not, I couldn’t figure it out–with little formal music training, the rhythm totally eluded me. Video is so much easier.
I love this video. I have been playing guitar for 5 years now (I started when I was 28, I’m a late bloomer), and the one thing that I can’t get down is singing while playing.(if you ask my wife that is a good thing because I can’t sing worth a dang) Your video has helped me make some progress and gave me some direction on how to move forward! Also, thank you for all the chord charts where you also give the strum patterns just as much attention as the chords themselves. That is a rarity on the internet.

Great to hear, Rodney. Thanks for this note.
Thanks for sharing such an awesome lesson. I am learning to play this song and couldn’t figure out where some of the chord changes are, your chord chart helps a lot. I love the way you break down the parts of the song. Would love to see more of these videos in the future. You rock!!

So glad you found this helpful, Jo. I’m hoping to have lots more videos out soon. Subscribe to my channel if you haven’t done so already if you want to be notified when they come out. I checked out your website–looks great so far!
Really good video – i haven’t played a guitar in years and I was worried it would be complicated to learn this on the internet but you made it as easy as it can be. Thank you!

nice one
This is a great video. I started playing a few months ago and this is the first video I have found that explains how to put the chords to the strum patterns and the tab in a way that i was able to understand instantly. I learnd piano 20+ years ago with a teacher. Now I’m 40 and learning the guitar online and through books. This. Oreo and your entire site is a great resource and it’s helping me build the confidence to find a teacher.

Wonderful to hear. The best tip I can give for singing and playing is to learn the vocal part really well by singing along with the recording a lot. Separately, learn the guitar part well enough to be able to play it while holding a conversation–i.e. it’s in your muscle memory and is almost automatic. Then bring the two together, first with a simplified strumming pattern. Good luck!
